John Smith

December 31, 1949 - February 17, 2022

Mr. John Smith, 72, of Lebanon, passed peacefully Thursday, Feb. 17, 2022, at home surrounded by loved ones.

John was born Dec. 31, 1949, in Lebanon, son of the late Harold B. and Betty E. (Merrill) Smith. On Nov. 8, 1968, he married Lynda Darlene Ford. She preceded him in death Aug. 20, 2016.

John served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and saw action; he was proud to be a Vietnam War Veteran. He worked for Commercial Filters as a welder, retiring after 30 years. He also designed the first flag for the city of Lebanon. John loved the Lord and would read daily devotions. His family was especially important to him, and he loved going on family trips, attending his grandkids’ sporting events, and visiting family in Arizona. John loved everyone he saw, and he was wise beyond his years.

Survivors include his children, Jason Smith and Johnna Taylor; grandchildren, Rhiannon Taylor, Robby Taylor, Ryan Taylor, Aubrie Beasey, Ariana Smith, Trevor Smith, Ryland Smith, and Abigail Smith; sisters, Debra Stump and Denise Matherly; cousin/ sister, Jill Miller and Gene Miller, cousin/ brother; girlfriend, Lisa Bailey; dog, Jax; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, John was preceded in death by his daughter, Jessica Smith; grandson, Dagun Smith; brother, Harold “Sonny” B. Smith; and two nieces.

Final care of John has been entrusted to the Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary, 2400 N. Lebanon Street, Lebanon.  Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the VFW Post 910, 318 W. Main St., Lebanon, IN 46052.
